BUS & MINIVAN
Two daily direct buses depart Mörön for Ulaanbaatar (T32,000, 18 to 20 hours), offi-
cially at 1.30pm and 4.30pm, but often later if there aren't enough passengers. Get your
ticket well in advance in late summer when the buses fill up with students headed for the
capital. Direct buses to the capital travel on the rough road via Ikh Uul, Khairkhan and
Ölziit, but this looks set to change as the northern route via Bulgan was under construc-
tion at the time of research and should be paved within the lifetime of this topic.
Minivans run between Mörön and Ulaanbaatar daily (T50,000, 17 hours, 671km), de-
parting at around 1pm. Minivans also run to Erdenet (T25,000, 12 hours) and Darkhan
(T30,000, 15 hours); there's usually one daily, departing at around 4.30pm; it can drop
passengers off in Bulgan (same price as Erdenet) on request. Buses and minibuses leave
from the car park next to the concrete bus station building, diagonally across from the
wrestling stadium.
From Mörön it is 273km to Tosontsengel in Zavkhan aimag and 353km to Bulgan
City.
HITCHING
The Ulaanbaatar-Erdenet-Mörön road is fairly busy, so hitching a ride shouldn't be a
problem. But be warned: the trip by truck between Ulaanbaatar and Mörön is a tough 27
or more nonstop hours and can cost as much as the faster bus. Some travellers do it one
way for the 'experience', and then gratefully fly back. It's best to fly here from Ulaan-
baatar, as it's easier to get a seat. It's also easier to hitch to UB rather than from it, as all
traffic funnels back to the capital.
MINIVAN & JEEP
The local jeep and minivan stand to sums around Khövsgöl is a small lot about 250m
north of the market, hidden behind a building. Vehicles to Tsagaannuur (T30,000) and
Renchinlkhumbe (T30,000) leave two or three times a week, as do vehicles south to Jar-
galant (T25,000), depending on demand. Vehicles leave most afternoons to Khatgal
(T20,000, one hour), either from the north of the market or from a separate parking area
just off the main road opposite the clothing stalls.
When there is demand, Bata Guesthouse ( Click here ) organises shared jeep trips to
Ulaanbaatar via Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur.
