DON'T MISS
UUSHIGIIN UVER
A Bronze Age site, Uushigiin Uver (GPS: N 49°39.334', E 99°55.701') contains 14 upright
carved deer stones, some with splendid white design against an ochre-coloured
background, plus sacrificial altars (keregsuur). This remarkable collection is loc-
ated 20km west of Mörön, and about 1km north of the Delgermörön Gol. The area
is enclosed by a fence and small placards describe the stones. The most unique,
stone 14 , is topped with the head of a woman; there are only a handful of such deer
stones in Mongolia. The carved stones are 2500 to 4000 years old, and the nearby
mountain range contains about 1400 burial tombs. When we visited, the whole
area was alive with Russian archaeologists digging for possible burial remains.
Perched on a ridge over the Delgermörön valley, the attractive Khargant (

showers and tasty meals. It's run by a helpful English-speaking local named Bat
who can assist with tours of the area. Even if you're not staying, it's a nice place for
lunch after visiting the deer stones at Uushigiin Uver. It is 7km past Uushigiin Uver.
