aimag, stuffed animals such as the ibex and the lynx are, not surprisingly, the main fea-
ture of the museum, as well as a large tusk from a woolly mammoth dating back at least
40,000 years. Highlights of the ethnographic display include a beribboned shaman outfit
and Jew's harp ( amiin khuur , or mouth fiddle), a wooden Tsaatan saddle and furry skis, a
Choijin robe with a skull-bedecked headpiece and a grain bag made of antelope skin.

The original (Möröngiin Khuree) was built around 1890 and was home to 2000 monks. It
was rebuilt and reopened in June 1990 and now has around three dozen monks of all
ages. The concrete ger contains a great collection of thangkas (Buddhist scroll paintings).
Khövsgöl Park PARK

This appealing park consists of a giant map of Khövsgöl aimag with each sum (district)
represented, showing off all the highlights of the aimag. A large Buddha statue MAP
GOOGLE MAP , which was donated by South Koreans, is located nearby.
Monument to Chingunjav MONUMENT
With a fierce expression on his face, the statue of mounted Chingunjav looks set to
trample you under its hooves. One of the two major leaders of the 1755-1756 rebellion
in Outer Mongolia, he ultimately failed, but today he is nevertheless recognised as a
fighter for Mongolia's independence from the Manchu when Mongolia was under the
rule of the Qing Dynasty.
