In-Depth Information
All the camps around the lake provide reasonably priced meals, as does Tunga Guest-
house. Self-caterers can stock up on supplies in either Tariat (there's a supermarket near
Khan Bank), or at the shops by the lake.
Information
At the time of research there was no internet in Tariat, but locals claim it's on the way.
Khan Bank ( 9am-1pm & 2-5pm Mon-Fri) In Tariat village, at the western end of the main
strip. Changes US dollars and euros, and can give cash advances on some credit cards
(MasterCard seems to work). There is no ATM, though.
Tariat Bathhouse (shower T3000; 8am-8pm) Turn north at the basketball court in the
centre of Tariat's main strip, and it's in front of you in a small white building with a blue
roof.
Getting There & Away
The bus stand is by the yak statue, just beyond Khan Bank on the main drag. A bus
leaves twice a week for Ulaanbaatar (T32,000, 12 hours), via Tsetserleg (T15,000). The
days of travel are not fixed, so ask at Tunga Guesthouse for the latest.
Minivans run the same route daily, if demand warrants it. They tend to charge T40,000
and T20,000 for Ulaanbaatar and Tsetserleg respectively. You'll also find them at the bus
stand.
Heading north or west will probably require chartering your own vehicle (about
T80,000 per day plus petrol). The road west of Tariat is unpaved and in poor condition.
Heading east, the road becomes paved after a couple of hours, and is good from there to
Ulaanbaatar.
