In-Depth Information
Khorgo Uul VOLCANO
(GPS: N 48°11.187', E 99°51.259') This 200m-tall extinct volcano, and its surrounding lava
field, dominates the area to the east of the lake. You walk around it on your way to the
lake from Tariat, but you can also climb up to the rim of the crater for some fabulous
views. There are steps up to the crater from the west side. Those with more energy, and a
good sense of balance, could try climbing the slippery scree slope on the volcano's east-
ern side. You can then walk around the rim of the crater (anticlockwise is easiest) and
climb down the steps. Sliding back down the scree sounds fun, but is pretty dangerous.
Activities
Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur is excellent for swimming (if a little cold). Hidden along the
shore are stretches of sandy beach, perfect for lounging with a book or fishing line. One
nice spot is the beach on the sandy spit which juts out from the northern shore at the
northeast corner of the lake.
The fishing is great, though you should get a permit for around T3000 per day. There
are several park rangers who sell permits, or try asking at the park entrance by the bridge
(GPS: N 48°09.777' E 99°53.312') that crosses the river as you exit Tariat.
There is also the option of exploring the lake by boat. Khorgo I and Maikhan Toilgoi
ger camps both have rowboats for rent (T20,000 per hour). It's also a pretty place to go
horse riding, or to just hike around. Most of the ger camps in the area rent horses, as does
Tunga Guesthouse in Tariat itself.
Sleeping
Except for a few annoying flies, Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur is an excellent place for camp-
ing. There is good fishing, endless fresh water, and flat ground for pitching a tent. And
there are very few mosquitoes, even in summer. The western end of the lake, where it
joins the Khoid Terkhiin Gol, is muddy. The best place to camp is the northern shore.
The area can be cold at night, year-round, and is often windy, so a good sleeping bag is
important.
Several ger camps are built up along the shore of the lake (mostly the northern and
northeastern shores), but they are all fairly spread out so it's not too crowded. In Tariat it-
self, head for Tunga Guesthouse.
