Tsetserleg to Tariat
Cutting straight through Arkhangai aimag, this 180km stretch of road is one of the most
scenic in Mongolia. It's rough in patches but road crews continue the slow process of
paving it.
The first place worth stopping is Taikhar Chuluu rock formation, just 22km east of
Tsetserleg. The rock is the subject of many local legends, the most common one being
that a great baatar (hero) crushed a huge serpent here by hurling the rock on top of it.
Locals claim there are some ancient Tibetan inscriptions on the rock, though you'll be
lucky to spot them through 30 years of modern graffiti. There is even an ovoo at the top.
You could camp anywhere along the Khoid Tamir Gol. Taikhar Ger Camp ( 9911 4060;
per person with/without meals T56,000/18,000) next to the rock, has hot-water showers and
flush toilets. Taikhar Chuluu is about 2km north of Ikh Tamir along the river - you can
see it from the main road.
The next landmark is Chuluut Gur (GPS: N 48°05.666', E 100°19.025') the bridge over the
Chuluut River ( gur means bridge). Near the bridge are a few tyre-repair shops and sever-
al guanz selling basic meals. About 2km past the bridge (on the south side of the road) is
the Chuluut Ger Camp ( 9911 8066; ger T25,000) , the best place to stay in the area.
About 30km east of Tariat is the dramatic Chuluut gorge , which makes a pleasant pic-
nic stop.

Tariat
The dusty village of Tariat is the jumping off point for Khorgo-Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur
National Park, which includes the region's standout natural sight, Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur,
or the Great White Lake. This large, freshwater lake glistens against a dramatic backdrop
of volcanic craters and pine-clad lava fields and is a wonderful place for walking, swim-
ming, camping and horse riding.
