HITCHING
All types of vehicles go to/from Tsetserleg and, generally, along the main road through
Arkhangai. Wait on the main road into and out of town (heading east or west), and
something will eventually stop.
MINIVAN & JEEP
Microbuses and minivans run between Tsetserleg and Ulaanbaatar (T25,000, 10 hours).
In Tsetserleg, minivans will wait by the bus stand. Expect to pay around T20,000 for
Kharkhorin (three hours, 115km).
Minivans and Jeeps to other places will wait at a car park near the market. You can
probably find a vehicle going to Tariat (T20,000).
There are two routes between Tsetserleg and Ulaanbaatar - northeast via Ögii Nuur
(453km) or along the longer but better road via Kharkhorin (493km).
Tsetserleg to Tosontsengel is 350km to the northwest, but the paved road only
stretches around halfway towards Tariat.
CYCLING TO TSENKHER HOT SPRINGS
Route: Tsetserleg to Tsenkher Hot Springs
Distance: 27km
Duration: 2½ hours one way
This rewarding countryside ride includes three tough climbs over passes at 1768m,
1820m and 1943m respectively (Tsetserleg, by comparison, lies at 1691m). The
rural scenery is lovely, though, and the promise of a soak in a hot spring helps spur
you on. Bike rental from Fairfield Guesthouse costs T25,000.
Ask Murray at Fairfield Guesthouse ( Click here ) for detailed directions, but ba-
sically; turn right out of the guesthouse, and keep cycling straight out of town until
the road bears right at the river. Follow the river for a couple of hundred metres,
then cross it over the wooden bridge. Continue across the grassland, cycling south
(roughly straight on) as you follow the main tracks up and down the three passes
before bearing very slightly right as you descend to the springs.
