( 9579 0048; GPS: N 47°22.553' E 103°40.961'; per person T5000, meals T4000-5000) Ider-
Tsogt is one of a number of herdsmen who rent out guest gers to travellers visiting the
national park. He doesn't speak English, but is warm and friendly. His gers are between
the main mountain and the sand dunes known as Mongol Els. Turn up to your left as you
approach the mountain from the main road. He also rents horses (per hour/day T7000/
15,000, plus the same again for your horse guide) for treks in and around the mountain
range. It takes three days to complete a circuit of the mountain by horse or by foot.

Getting There & Away
To get to Khögnö Khan Uul from Kharkhorin by jeep, turn north off the main road, 80km
east of Kharkhorin, just past the huge sand dunes known as Mongol Els. From the turn-
off, the track passes several herdman's gers (Ider-Tsogt's Family Ger is up to your left
from here) until, after 8km, you reach Khögnö Khan ger camp, where you turn right for
the remaining 4km or so to the monastery ruins. There is a shortcut if you are coming
from Ulaanbaatar (the turn-off is marked by a sign that says 'Ar Mongol', 1.2km after
the Bichigt Khad ger camp).
There is no public transport to the monastery but you can take a Kharkhorin-, Khujirt-
or Arvaikheer-bound minivan from Ulaanbaatar, get off at the turn-off on the main road
and then hitch (or more likely walk) the remaining 12km.
Mongol Els

Ulaanbaatar, one surprising sight that livens up a fairly boring stretch of road is the sand
dunes of Elsen-Tasarkhai (GPS: N 47°19.819' E 103°41.618) . Better known in Ulaanbaatar's
