In-Depth Information
A community-based tourism project at Khustain allows visitors to stay with nomad fam-
ilies just outside the park by the Tuul River. You can ride horses, learn felt-making and
experience daily life in the countryside. The per-day cost is US$25 per person including
meals. You need to arrange things at the park entrance, but you pay the families directly.
Independent camping is not allowed inside the park so you have to camp outside the
park boundary. The best place to go is the south side of the park by Tuul Gol.
To book accommodation in the park, contact the Hustai National Park Trust (
21-245 087; www.hustai.mn ; Hustai Bldg, 2nd khoroo, Bayangol District) in Ulaanbaatar. The of-
fice is about 2km west of the State Department Store ( Click here ) , off Peace Ave. Turn
north off Peace Ave directly opposite Decor Hotel then, following the small signs for
'Hustai Trust', turn right, left, right, left and right again, and you'll see the office in front
of you. This is also where the twice-weekly minibus to the park leaves from.
Hustain Tourist Camp TOURIST GER CAMP$$$
(per person with 3 meals T82,500, with breakfast only T32,000) There is a large ger camp at the
entrance to the park (the payment for accommodation includes the park entrance). The
rather average restaurant here charges T17,500 for dinner, T23,000 for lunch.
Moilt Camp CABIN$$$
(per person with 3 meals T82,500, with breakfast only T32,000) Basic wooden cabins plus two
gers clustered in a pretty valley. Prices are the same as at Hustain Tourist Camp, although
facilities aren't as good. The location, though, is far nicer.
Getting There & Away
To get to the park, travel 100km west from Ulaanbaatar, along the road to Kharkhorin,
where there is a signpost pointing you 13km south to the park entrance. A minivan (one
way US$15) travels from the park to Ulaanbaatar and back twice a week, departing the
park at about noon on Friday and Sunday, and returning from Ulaanbaatar at 6pm on the
same days (5pm in winter). The van only has 10 seats, and is really for workers and vo-
lunteers, so you need to make an advanced booking. In UB it leaves from the Hustai Na-
tional Park Trust office (
21-245 087; off Peace Ave) .
