SOS Medica Mongolia Clinic MAP GOOGLE MAP ( 11-464 325; 4a bldg, Big Ring Rd;
9am-6pm Mon-Fri) This clinic has a staff of Western doctors on call 24 hours (after
hours call 9911 0335). Its services don't come cheap (examinations start from around
US$195), but it's the best place to go in an emergency.
MONEY
Banks, ATMs and moneychangers are widespread. Banks with the best services include
Golomt, Khan Bank and Trade & Development Bank. ATMs (you'll find them in depart-
ment stores, mini markets and hotel lobbies) dispense tögrög; you can get dollars or
euros from a bank teller, with your debit card and passport (expect a fee of around 1% to
3% from your home bank). The moneychanger on the ground floor of the State Depart-
ment Store is handy but rates here are not the best. The moneychangers at Ard Kino and
Ikh Naiman Sharga have the best rates.
Both Golomt and Trade & Development Bank will allow you to receive money wired
from abroad. It will cost the sender about US$40 to wire any amount of money; there is
no charge for receiving cash.

Ikh Naiman Sharga MAP GOOGLE MAP (Tömörchiin Gudamj; 9am-7pm) This build-
ing contains several moneychangers on the ground floor. The exchange rates here are the
best in UB. The sign on the building says:
Trade & Development Bank (T&D Bank; 11-327 095; 9am-4pm Mon-Fri) Will change
travellers cheques into tögrög for a 1% fee or into US dollars for a 2% fee. Will also re-
place lost Amex travellers cheques.
PERMITS
If you are travelling to border areas such as Altai Tavan Bogd National Park in Bayan-
Ölgii, the General Office of Border Protection ( 11-454 142; Border Defence Bldg;
10am-12.30pm & 2-5pm Mon-Fri) , in the east of the city, is the place to go for permits. Per-
mits are free but you must send a Mongolian on your behalf to apply. The office requires
a passport photocopy and a map showing your route. The office is in a grey building just
west of the Mongolian Military Museum.
