While it's not particularly old, this fine-dining restaurant has an
almost colonial air to it, with couch seating inside and a big porch overlooking the
Choijin Lama Temple Museum. The food is surprisingly good, with starters that include
smoked-salmon rolls and spinach salad with feta, and an array of delectable main dishes
that fuse Italian and French recipes, such as lamb ratatouille, grilled duck and peppercorn
steak. Breakfast is available on weekdays.

A long-time Ulaanbaatar eatery, Silk Road is so named for its bas-relief scenes of the
ancient route from China to Europe. The menu also carries a trans-Eurasian theme, with
sprinklings of Indian, Central Asian and Mediterranean treats, including shish kebabs,
chicken tikka and pork
gyros
(pitta with meat and vegetables). It's in the same building
as Veranda.

, with plastic tablecloths and bare walls, may not have much atmosphere but it's
well known for serving some of the best
buuz
in the city (nearly homemade quality). Un-
like most other cafes, the dumplings here are not overly fatty and come piping hot from a
special steamer. Try a few with
suutei tsai
(Mongolian milk tea). It's the westernmost in
a string of five, small restaurants. Look for the picture of the two kids gorging on a big
plate of
buuz
.

The menu is actually mostly European but there are a few classic Mongolian
dishes, so this is a decent place to try

head. It's part of a chain of restaurants but this branch seems to get slightly better re-
