How often do you say, 'Hey,
let's go for some North Korean tonight!' It's possible in UB, at this authentic restaurant
where specialities include Pyongyang cold buckwheat noodles and crispy cabbage kim-
chi, and kimchi pancakes. Staff sometimes put on rousing North Korean videos during
the meals. It's the sixth door on the right as you walk east on Urt Tsagaan pedestrian
mall. The sign can be really hard to spot among the clutter of boards on this building.
SELF-CATERING
For self-caterers, there are many shops around the city that sell food imported
from China, Korea, the US and Europe. Fresh fruit and veggies are also available;
some items are home-grown in Mongolia, although most of what you'll find is im-
ported from China. Some tasty local products include yoghurt, cheese, apples,
berries, tomatoes and cream. Most markets are open from about 10am to 8pm
daily.
Bread is available everywhere but the best is found at small bakeries like the

has nice bread loaves, and pret-
zels that are best when purchased early in the day when they are still warm out of
the oven.
Merkuri food market private vendors sell imported goods, meat, cheese, fruit and
vegetables - easily the best selection of fresh food products in the country. The
door is small and there is no sign but you can find it by walking to the right side of
the large 'Minii Delguur' supermarket (or just follow the crowds and ask for
'Merkuri'). The complex itself is hidden behind apartment buildings about about
200m west of the State Circus.
