DINING GUANZ-STYLE
There are dozens of Mongolian budget restaurants (guanz)and they can be found
on every block in the city. Some are chain restaurants and you'll start to recognise
prominent eateries, including Zochin Buuz, Khaan Buuz and Zochin Cafe. They
serve up buuz(steamed mutton dumplings), tsuivan(fried noodles) plus soups
and bifshteks ondogtei(beefsteak with egg). They are often quite dire - think globs
of mashed potatoes, chunks of fatty mutton, and rice topped with ketchup - so
keep your expectations at ground zero. Some of the chains operate 24 hours.
Meals cost T4500 to T8000.
Look for them at these locations:

Store. One of the most popular of the bunch, owing to its landmark location on
Peace Ave. English-language and picture menu available.

(M-100 Bldg, Juulchiin Gudamj; dishes T5000-8500; 10am-9pm; ) Famous for
being the first vegan restaurant in Mongolia, this place remains very popular for its con-
sistently tasty and healthy food. The kitchen whips up classic Mongolian dishes such as
the Flour Power ( tsuivan - fried noodles), and Mongol Combo Plate (with buuz and
khuushuur ), as well as European fare like spaghetti and goulash. We're particularly fond
of the 'Power Lunch', with soy meat, mashed potatoes and gravy. The atmosphere is re-
freshingly clean, alcohol-free, kid-friendly and (best of all) it's great value for money.
There is also some excellent local art on the walls created by the well-known painter
Tugs-Oyun.
