paints, that are free of organotin compounds, have been developed. In
addition to cuprous oxide, several organic chemical substances, such as
2-mercaptopyridine N -oxide zinc salt, are used as biocides in organotin-free
antifouling paints. However, few studies have been undertaken on either the
fate in the aquatic environment or the harmful effects on aquatic organ-
isms of these alternative antifouling biocides (referred to as “new biocides”
hereafter).
