Insurance
You'd do well to take out an insurance policy before travelling, to cover against theft, loss
and illness or injury. Before paying for a new policy, however, it's worth checking whether
you are already covered: some all-risks home insurance policies may cover your possessions
when overseas, and many private medical schemes include cover when abroad.
There's little opportunity for dangerous sports in Beijing (unless crossing the road counts)
so a standard policy should be sufficient.

Internet
Free wi-fi is widespread, and it's safe to assume that cafés will have it - they even have it at
McDonald's . Some hotels charge for wi-fi, typically the more expensive ones; daily fees of
over 100 are not unheard of. At hostels it's almost always free; the same goes for some of
the budget hotels.
