Although Chinese cinema goes back a long way, much of its early produce came from
Shanghai,ratherthanBeijing.Thecapitalfinallystartedtopumpoutfilmsinquantity
during the Great Leap Forward, but output across the nation was choked off with the
CulturalRevolution-nofilmwasproducedanywhereinthecountrybetween1966and
1970. Recovery, understandably, took time, but since the early 1980s China in general,
and Beijing in particular, have been making larger and larger ripples in world cinema.
