A chain of small, almost deli-like supermarkets with branches all over
the east of the city. All sorts of goodies line their crowded shelves, making this the place to
head if you want exotic goodies like olives, cheese (often incredibly cheap), or international
cereals.
Daily 8am-11pm.
TEA
There are tea shops all over the city, and many offer free samples; some also double as places
in which to buy
teasets
, though these will be cheaper in dedicated pottery or souvenir shops.

马连道茶叶街
, mǎliándào cháyèjiē. Behind Beijing West train station;
out this street, which hosts hundreds of tea shops along a 1.5km-long stretch. They all of-
fer free tastings, but remember that you're expected to bargain for the actual product. You're
spoilt for choice, of course, but check out four-storey Tea City, about halfway down. There's
plenty of tea paraphernalia around, too, much of which makes good gifts - look for porous
Yixing ware teapots.
Huge chain with stores across the city; one of their best is on pedestrianized Qianmen Dajie.
Some staff speak English, and there's very little pressure to buy - so many people shop here
each day that they don't need to hassle for custom. All sorts of tea available, from the ex-
tremely cheap to the extraordinarily expensive.
Daily 8am-9pm.
well as a wide range of teas and tea sets, in summer months they serve delectable green-tea
ice cream from a shopfront window. Other branches across the city.
