This renovated courtyard house has really gone for a Chinese feel; everything, from the
designs on the carpets to the latticework windows, is red, tassled or plastered with characters.
Even the cisterns are decorated with Chinese motifs. But if you don't mind a bit of chintz,
this is a pretty successful marriage of
hutong
house and comfy pad. The central courtyard has
been turned into a sociable lounge by the addition of a glass roof, and it's cute and quiet with

This is about as close as you'll be able to
stay to the
Summer Palace
,
both in terms of location - it's just outside the east gate - and feel.
Parts of the complex are centuries old, and there's even a secret gate into the palace, which
can be opened at night for a crowd-free stroll. As with most
Aman
resorts, this is a place to
get away from it all (for those who have the cash); the restaurants, pool and spa facil
ities ar

top-notch, though staff have a little to learn about what's expected of luxury service.

798 Art District
. Sure, you're rather far away
from central Beijing, but you're in one of the city's most characterful areas. Cheaper rooms
are a tiny bit small

e price, but they're all suitably artistic, and there's a nice Italian res-
