In-Depth Information
Visitors usually head south of Tian'anmen Square for one main reason - the ravishing
Temple of Heaven, a visually arresting ancient building that counts as an example of
Beijing's imperial architecture at its best. However, there's plenty to distract you in the
Qianmendistrictonyourway.Ofmostinterestistheearthy,old-fashioned hutong area
surrounding the famed Dazhalan Lu shopping street, which has been Beijing's prime
backpacker base for decades, and remains the city's best area for aimless browsing,
snacking and wandering. Close to the Temple of Heaven lies another site of imperial
ritual, the Temple of Agriculture, which is now the engrossing Museum of Ancient Ar-
chitecture. West of here, Niu Jie - at the heart of the city's Muslim quarter - and the
Fayuan Temple are both well worth a look.
