The only sight in the Nanluogu Xiang area is
Mao Dun's Former Residence
, a charming
little courtyard house. Mao Dun was the pen name of Shen Dehong, writer, communist and
ex-minister of culture, whose best work is
Midnight
, a tale of cosmopolitan Shanghai. His
house today has been preserved since he died in 1981, and is full of manuscripts and knick-
knacks, with some elegant period furniture.
