means that the responses of high mountain plants refl ect trends of
climate change rather than short-term vacillations;
• historical inventories are only usable if an exact localization is
possible and a reliable identifi cation of species combined with suitable
quantitative measures;
• many high mountain areas are virtually free of human infl uence and
even where there is some impact, there are always undisturbed and
diffi cult to access places and peaks, i.e., high mountain areas are among
the few regions on earth where the climate signal can be captured
without interference.
