reduction certifi cates in the current voluntary carbon market, and
in an institutional one created under the umbrella of the UNFCCC
(2.a).

c. The dissemination of non-tillage cropping—very common in the
country's major cereal growing area—together with the adoption of
cover-crops or mulching would keep carbon in the soil and reduce
water loss by evaporation. In this way regional warming would be
constrained and increasingly scarce water would be better used.
In this respect there is relevant research by Uliarte et al. (2006,
2009a,b,c) and Catania et al. (2010) which focused on the effects
of species and management to the vegetation between the rows
in vineyards can have on the potential of CO 2 fi xation and water
consumption.

d. Firewood is commonly burnt for domestic and industrial heating
in the NOA and Cuyo regions, e.g., drying tobacco leaves in the
provinces of Salta and Jujuy. The use of this renewable fuel should
be promoted as a substitute of fossil fuels in so far fi rewood were
sustainably obtained, i.e., by avoiding the deforestation and
degradation of native forests.

e. Agriculturally marginal lands in arid areas of the provinces of
Catamarca and La Rioja have been promoted for planting jatropha
( Jatropha curcas L.) for producing biodiesel from its oil-rich seeds
(Panadero Pastrana 2009). In Mendoza the National Institute for
Agricultural Research is trialling the canola crop for producing
biodiesel (Silva Colomer 2010); the same is being done in the
province of Tucumán in its experiment station. 8 Bioethanol 9 from
sugarcane has been produced in the NOA region since 40 years ago,
but its blend with petrol is not mandatory yet.
