biodiversity in the world. UNESCO has recognized three areas as UNESCO
world heritage natural sites. The cultural importance of the Sri Lankan
highlands is extremely high; before colonization it was the core area of the
national kingdom for centuries and the tooth relic of Buddha placed in
that palace is the most pretigious place for Buddhist people in the world.
On the other hand, the management of the sensitive ecosystems of the
Sri Lankan highlands is extremely weak and destructive. Due to climatic
changes, deforestation has taken place since colonization, with population
growth and urbanization, water mismanagement, etc. the present situation
of the highland had been drastically changed. A strategy for sustainable
