Soon after the aforementioned paper by Buchroithner et al. (1982)
Wilfried Haeberli reported about 'glacier fl oods' in the Swiss Alps (Haeberli
1983). In 1985 some Japanese scientists and one Nepali published a short
note on catastrophic fl oods in Nepal originating from glacier lakes (Fushimi
et al. 1985). In the following years Vuichard and Zimmermann (1986, 1987)
reported in detail about the Langmoche fl ashfl ood in Khumbu Himal, Nepal
caused by the sudden drainage of Dig Thso (cf. Fig. 14.2). In 1986 a fi rst
comprehensive monograph about GLOFS, initiated by the Kathmandu-
based International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development
(ICIMOD), was issued by Jack D. Ives (Ives 1986).
