Beginning of Scientiϐic Interests
GLOFs of potentially dangerous glacial lakes (PDGLs) have been known
for long and have been studied by means of remote sensing since the 1970s.
K.J. Hsü (1975) mentions (probably as one of the fi rst ones worldwide)
catastrophic debris streams, which he calls 'Sulzstroms', generated by
rockfalls. Louis Lliboutry (Spanish: Luis Lliboutry ) was a French geographer,
glaciologist and mountaineer who, since the 1950s, partly lived in Chile.
In 1977 he published three papers in the renowned Journal of Glaciology
about glaciological problems set by the control of dangerous glacial lakes
in the Cordillera Blanca in the Peruvian Andes (Lliboutry 1977, Lliboutry
et al. 1977a, 1977b).
