to the fact that a mountain acts as natural 'air-conditioned zone'. Although
there are no distinct seasons on the Equator, there is a likelihood of a shift
of tourism patterns in Kenya too, with mountain areas especially Mt. Kenya
becoming more appealing during the peak season (October-March). During
northern winter (October-March), Kenya's coast is usually very appealing
to tourists from Europe and North America due to its sunshine. This may
change as beaches may become hotter and unsuitable for tourism during
the peak season in the next 50 years (Fig. 8.3).
Generally, mountain ecosystems possess higher levels of biodiversity
some of which are endemic. Endemic species such as those found on Mt.
Kenya, are expected to be sensitive to climate change. Climate change may
alter the fi tness of individual species and cause either species migration or
extinction. The degree of the impact will vary by species and by region. For
