Pakistan, Mongolia, Cambodia, Laos, and Timor-Leste
are among these. Some, such as Myanmar and North
Korea, have higher death rates (DRs) than other countries.
The difference between these two measures is the natural
increase rate (NIR). While Timor-Leste has a high BR
(40/1,000), it has a much lower DR (9/1,000). This re-
sults in a very high NIR (3.1%).
T Total fertility rates (TFRs) have fallen quite rapidly
over the past 20 years. In Asian countries (excluding the
Middle East), women had an average of 5.82 children be-
tween 1950 and 1955. By 1980-1985, the TFR had
dropped to 3.54. From 2000 to 2005, the TFR had fallen
to 2.39. T To illustrate further, Bangladesh' s TFR was 7 in
1975 and is now 2.5.
What does this mean in terms of population growth?

ment fertility rate (RFR) . Replacement fertility rate
