THE ANIMAL TRADE
Unfortunately , too many people hunt and trade in exotic
live beasts, their skins, horns, feathers, claws, and other
body parts. According to the Wildlife Conservation
Society' s(WCS) 2006 report, illegal trade in wildlife is a
$6 billion a year industry .

The WCS believes that the death rate for transported
birds is as high as 80 percent.
The World Wildlife Federation describes the world' s
largest illicit animal market in Jakarta, Indonesia. At the
Pramuka Market, one can purchase, orangutans, gib-
bons, eagles, parrots, and even a Komodo dragon (lizard)
among hundreds of other species. Many of these beasts
are taken or sent by air to Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand,
and the Middle East.
India' s Wildlife Crime Database, maintained by the
Wildlife Protection Society of India, established some es-
timates of illegally traded animals. These include 846
tigers, 3,140 leopards, and 585 otters (skins) that were
poached between 1994 and 2008. From 2000 to 2008,
320 elephants were killed.
Live Animals
Nearly 99,000 primates were imported into the United
States between 1995 and 2002. The favorite acquisitions
are various species of monkeys and baby orangutans.
Orangutans have even been carried into the country in
hand luggage! T Typically the animal' s parents are poi-
soned or shot and the baby is captured for shipment.
