In-Depth Information
Taiwan is hardly the place to build tall because of
the many earthquakes that strike the island each year. A
7.6 quake centered in the middle of the island killed
2,415 people in 1999. The most recent quake was 6.4 in
2010. Furthermore, typhoons with high velocity winds
impact the island several times a year. For example, T Ty-
phoon Morakot swept the island in August, 2009 caus-
ing the worst floods since 1959. More than 100 people
were killed. Many Taiwanese believe that Taipei 101 is a
dangerous building despite the designers' claim that it is
perfectly safe and able to withstand the forces of nature.
In spite of its difficulties, Taiwan will continue to be
an economic tiger in Asia. It will increase its economic
ties with the mainland, but the future of its political rela-
tionship with the PRC, while now at a fragile status quo,
remains in question.
