Mongolian herders live in gers. Gers, like yurts,
have a collapsible wood frame and are covered
with felt and canvas. A cooking and heating fire
occupies the center and there is a hole in the
roof for the smoke to escape. Many gers now
have a battery-run light bulb of 20 or 40 watts.

Now that Mongolia is out from under Russian con-
trol, China is exerting its authority . For example, China
has loudly protested visits of the Dalai Lama to Mongolia
and has discouraged connections with the Mongols of
Nei Mongol. For decades, Mongolia has served as a
buffer state between China and the Soviet Union with its
strongest links to the U.S.S.R. T Today, , Mongolia is a buffer
state between China and Russia with increasing ties—
wanted and unwanted—to China.
