Qing (Ch'ing)
Largest China-centered empire ever. Incorporates vast
(Manchu)
area including much of T Turkestan, Mongolia, Xizang
(Tibet), Burma, Indochina, Korea, and Taiwan. The
Qing map of this expanded territory justifies China' s
claim to Tibet. Retains Ming administrative framework
and officials. Population pressure, land concentrated
with big landowners, floods, and famines. European
powers force concessions. Opium War 1839-42. Britain
acquires Hong Kong. Taiping Rebellion 1850-65. First
railroad out of Shanghai in 1875. Boxer Rebellion
1890s-1901. T reaty ports number 100 by 1910.

20th c AD
Collapse of Qing Dynasty . Period of Warlords. Sun
Yat-sen forms Nationalist Party . Civil war between
Chiang Kai-shek and the Nationalists and Mao Zedong
and Communists. People' s Republic declared.
