ANDAMAN AND NICOBAR UNION TERRITORY
The Andaman and Nicobar islands, in southeastern Bay of
Bengal, are considered an Indian Union T Territory. . The An-
damans, consisting of more than 300 islands, sit on an an-
cient trade route between Burma and India. The islands
served as penal colonies in the nineteenth century . Only a
few indigenous hunters and gatherers remain, with the
majority population being Indian. In 2001, the popula-
tion of the Andaman and Nicobar islands was 356,265.
The Andamans comprise a series of highly dissected
longitudinal valleys and are densely forested with man-
groves to the north. There are few rivers, and fresh water is
difficult to get. Only the south Andamans have roads. The
main activity is agriculture, focusing on coconut, betel,
and other palm nuts, cassava, and spices such as tumeric.
The Andamese language is interesting in that it has
no numeric component. There is a word for “one” and
another word for “more than one.” Andamese is unre-
lated to any other language.
LAKSHADWEEP UNION TERRITORY
The Laccadive islands, a collection of coral reef islands in
the Arabian Sea off the southwest coast of India, were re-
named Lakshadweep in 1973. There are only 13 islands
of which 8 are inhabited. The inhabitants are of Indian
and Arab descent and practice Islam. The islands are cov-
ered with a sandy coral soil. Coconut groves are every-
where, and the production of coir (coconut fiber) is the
major industry . Coir production is conducted by women.
Men build boats and indulge in fishing.
