Ang Lee and Taiwan' s former president Chen Shui-bian
have made public service announcements against the
practice. Thai Airways and Singapore Airlines pulled
shark fin soup from their first class menus in 2000. Hong
Kong Disneyland and Hong Kong University no longer
serve the soup after protests by animal rights and marine
conservation groups.
SEWA (Self-employed Women' s Association), men-
tioned earlier, is a 30-year-old organization dedicated to
self-empowering Indian women. Fighting for women
against being cheated by employers, charged usurious
loans, being forced to bribe police among other indigni-
ties, SEWA now has 76,000 members in seven states. The
organization was instrumental in the creation of India' s
National Policy on Street Vendors. More than 76 cooper-
atives have been formed for market gardening, tree grow-
ing, handicraft production, milk production, and salt
mining in coastal areas. SEWA has also established net-
works of child care, health care, insurance, and housing
provision. More than 300,000 women have taken advan-
tage of the new health-care facilities and 110,000 are now
covered by insurance.
All people need food, shelter, and clothing. The
particular ways we fulfill those needs reflect our diverse
cultures, and the climates and ecosystems we call
home. But no factor matters more than our affluence.
No matter where we live, the more money we have, the
more we spend. The more we consume and the more we
waste, the more we harm the Earth, including both the
haves and the have-nots residing in it. Greater eco-
nomic stability and food security for those living in
emerging economies must be the goal for all of us. The
most significant challenge of all is that we must achieve
this state of well-being for all humankind without ac-
celerating ecosystem collapse and total environmental
ruination.
