carrier stream. Reactions take place on the overlapped sections of the zones in
a practically single-channelled configuration.
Sequential Injection Chromatography: This new term was introduced in the
mid-2000 in order to describe the incorporation of short monolithic stationary
phases for liquid chromatography to SI systems. The new technique is a hybrid
between SI and HPLC and combines the automation potentials of SI (on-line
derivatization, extraction, dilution etc) and the separation efficiency of liquid
chromatography.
Solid Phase Spectrophotometry: The concept of solid phase spectrophotometry
(or solid phase spectroscopy) was introduced in mid-1970 as an alternative
approach for increasing the sensitivity and selectivity of classical solution-
based UV-Vis methods. Measurement of the analyte(s) of interest - either
directly or after a suitable reaction - is carried out after absorption on a
suitable solid support that is located in the flow-cell of a UV-Vis detector.
Supported Liquid Membranes: An alternative approach for performing liquid-
liquid extraction under flow conditions. The extractant, typically a non-
miscible organic solvent, instead of flowing continuously is immobilized within
the pores of a suitable hydrophobic membrane (e.g. made of PTFE). The
analytes of interest are extracted upon contact with the membrane from an
aqueous donor stream (sample) through the immobilized solvent to a suitable
acceptor solution that undergoes detection.
