10.1 Introduction
Electrophoresis has been used for decades as a separation technique of ionic
species. Although it can be done on preparative scale, the analytical technique
is of particular interest, because of the wide applicability, which has been
demonstrated for a great number of analytes and matrices. Due to the inherent
Joule heating developed during the electrophoretic running, the efficiency of
the separation technique was limited until the small bore silica capillary
become available, because the better efficiency in heating dissipation makes
possible the use of a high electric field, which improves the number of plates.
