2.10. Saint John's Hospital Museum
Saint's Johns Hospital is more than 800 years old and is so much more than a museum ded-
icated to an old hospital.
In fact, this was no ordinary hospital at all as it has a long history of caring for pilgrims,
travellers, and sick people - and the people of Bruges are fiercely proud of it.
Dating back to the 11th century, this is actually one of the oldest hospitals still standing any-
where in Europe and is a must visit for anybody interested in social history. The popularity
and the demand for the hospital's services swiftly grew and as the hospital expanded, a con-
vent and monastery were also built on the premises.
The medieval wards, the collection of archives, medical instruments and paintings by Hans
Memling are the main attractions of the museum. The Pharmacy, the Diksmuide attic and
the old dormitory are also worth a look.
