2.6. Old Hansa Quarter
Bruges is one of the most important and iconic historic cities in Europe and by visiting the
Old Hansa Quarter, you can truly get a sense of what life would have been like in Bruges
centuries ago.
In the middle ages, mostly between the 13th and the 15th centuries, Bruges was an extremely
important trading post as it was so well connected to the Hansa cities in England, Germany
and Scandinavia, as well as trading posts of continental Europe in Spain, France, and Italy.
The Old Hansa Quarter was truly the commercial lifeblood of Bruges and of Belgium all
those centuries ago, and the quaint architecture and cobbled streets of the area can transport
any visitor right back to that time.
