2.5. The Beguinage
The Beguinage of Bruges is a must visit destination for fans of historical or religious archi-
tecture. But you don't need to have expert knowledge about Belgian history to appreciate all
of the splendour of this destination as the sheer beauty speaks for itself.
Granted its full name, the Princely Beguinage Ten Wijngaarde dates right back to 1245 and
is a true slice of the history of Bruges.
The word “beguinage” translates to mean something along the lines of a collection of small
buildings used by Beguines (a religious order found in this part of the world between the
13th and 16th centuries), and that is exactly what you will find here.
The whitewashed quaint buildings are unmistakable in their beauty, and in The Beguinage
you will also find a convent garden and a Beguinage Museum.
Opening Hours: Monday - Sunday: 6:30 am - 6:30 pm
