In-Depth Information
Right in the centre of the square, there is a much celebrated statue of Jan Breydel, an ordin-
ary butcher from Bruges who led a political uprising in the 14th century and has remained
a local hero ever since.
Travellers Tip: The best place to buy fries in Bruges is in the two green stalls in front of
the Belfry tower (these stalls are open almost 24/7).
Another attraction in this square is the Historium . This new attraction is located in the
same building as the tourist information centre, and takes your on an interactive journey
back to how Bruges was in the Middle Ages. In the seven rooms that the museum has to
offer, you can walk around and discover what the 15th century port was like, peer into the
studios of the painter Jan Van Eyck, or just get a glimpse at the streets of Bruges in the 15th
century.
You can also enjoy a panoramic view of the Square Market from the terrace.
