1.8. Saint Michael and Saint Gudula Cathedral
For fans of Catholic history, this spectacular chapel is a must visit upon arriving in Brussels.
It's difficult to say exactly how and when the cathedral came into being as it has most likely
had many stages to its history. It's thought that a chapel was erected on the site where the
cathedral stands in the 9th century, but it wasn't until the 11th century that a more elaborate
church structure was built in the Romanesque style.
In the thirteenth century, two round towers were added to the church, and the choir was also
erected.
Recently, falcons' nests have been found within the towers, and one of the main attractions
for tourists is to watch these falcons sit and interact with each other on the gothic gargoyles
on the exterior of the building.
