1.7. Cinquantenaire Park
Brussels is not only a city with incredible buildings, museums, and statues - there are also a
multitude of green spaces in the city that make leisure time in the spring and summer months
a complete pleasure. The most celebrated urban park in Brussels is Cinquantenaire Park,
which takes up 30 hectares of space and is located in the European Quarter of the city.
The park was created in 1880 as a mark of the 50th anniversary of Belgium's independence.
The most famous structure in the park, an arch that stands directly in the centre, was erected
in 1905 and is surrounded by beautiful greenery and water features such as ponds.
The various buildings that comprise this complex are now mostly museums, and one mosque
can be found here also. The green space is used for many official purposes such as milit-
ary parades and drive in movie screenings. And, of course, the park is perennially popular
with families and groups of friends who simply like to spend time together in this expanse
of green space.
