In-Depth Information
image of MSPs with controlled diameter suspended in hexane. Ferrite
particles were successfully encapsulated in sugar microspheres.
Even without external magnetic force, MSPs formed self-assembled
structure because each ferrite particle itself has slight magnetic force.
The average diameter and standard deviation (SD) of large and small
MSPs were 294 ± 41 mm and 69 ± 18 mm, respectively. In addition
to the size, SD in diameter of MSPs was also tunable. Figure 8.15
shows optical microscope images of three kinds of MSPs. As shown
here, SD in diameter is large in Fig. 8.15(a) while it is small in Fig.
8.15(c). By changing the width of sieving range, degree of variance
was controlled successfully.

Figure 8.15 Magnetic sugar particles with tunable standard deviation
of diameter. Standard deviation is large in (a) while the size
is almost uniform in (c). Numerical information is shown in
Fig. 8.16.
Figure 8.16 shows numerical information of Fig. 8.15. The
average diameter and SD of MSPs 1, MSPs 2, MSPs 3 were 295 ± 105
μ m, 369 ± 59 μ m, 456 ± 24 μ m, respectively. This plot indicates the
following results:
