FIGURE 5.5 As an alternative to dentures, patients can
have metallic dental root prosthetics implanted to replace each
missing tooth. The implant is then topped with a porcelain
crown. One advantage of dental implants over dentures is
that the implant transmits mechanical forces into the jawbone
and stimulates it, resulting in less bone recession over time.
