physiologically realistic response curve, which corresponds to the parameter
permutation involving three parameters ( A OBA , A OCA , and A OST = −/+/+) and is
similar to the idealized response curve shown in Figure 7.7.
It is noticed that in a bone remodeling system without consideration of
mechanical stimulus, the response involving three parameters ( D OBU / D OBP /
A OCA = +/−/+) coincides with the known physiological action of TGF-β on
bone cells. TGF-β promotes differentiation of osteoblast progenitors and
inhibits differentiation of osteoblast precursor cells while promoting osteo-
clast apoptosis [3]. However, in the case of mechanical bone remodeling, this
combination causes exponential increases for both BMC and BFE similar to
those illustrated in Figure  7.6(a). In other words, with the introduction of
mechanical stimuli, the bone remodeling system changes. This warrants
attention from biologists and other researchers.
