and represents a percentage reduction of stiffness at the inner
surface of the bone. It is worth mentioning that by using the
semianalytical approach, the form of stiffness variation in the
radial direction can be arbitrary. Figure 4.6 shows the results of
ε and η at the outside surface of the bone for ξ = 0.995, 0.99, and
0.98. In general, the remodeling rate declines as the initial stiff-
ness of the inner bone surface decreases. The inhomogeneity of
the bone has a significant effect on the bone surface remodeling.
A higher surface remodeling rate is always related to a higher
level of inhomogeneity.
