• Object based scalable coding, both temporal and spatial.
Obviously, MPEG-4 provides the best possible choice for any multimedia
application or service that needs to provide bandwidth e ciency, interactiv-
ity, adaptability, content based access, summarization, authoring and con-
tent re-purposing. However, the technical and computational complexity of
the encoder lead to a substantial delay in developing the tools needed for
a fully functional implementation of MPEG-4. The currently available tools
only implement the basic specifications, which aim only for achieving better
compression ratios, or adaptive bit rate or quality. Therefore, the advanced
functionality of object manipulation is still not achievable. However, there is
an intense research activity going on in the fields of video segmentation, object
detection, modelling and recognition, and scene understanding. It is believed
that many advanced techniques are likely to become available in near future.
2.5.7 H.264/AVC
H.264 Advanced Video Coding (H.264/AVC) [24, 25] is again the results of
joint effort between MPEG and VCEG. It was developed in response to the
growing need for higher compression of video signal for various applications
