In-Depth Information
(2) Two-dimensional bar code methods;
(3) Color code methods.
10.4.1 One-Dimensional Bar Code Methods
As shown in Fig. 10.4(a), JAN (Japan Article Number) is a 1-dimensional
bar code that can be read and recognized by Barcode Reader [10]. It is a
popular application for the mobile phone in Japan. JAN is standardized by
JIS (JIS-X-0501) and is carried by almost all of the goods in the store.
10.4.2 Two-Dimensional Bar Code Methods
As shown in Fig. 10.4(b), QR Code (Quick Response Code) is a 2-dimensional
bar code, which is also standardized by JIS (JIS-X-0501). Currently it has been
widely used in the applications of print-to-web linking technology using the
mobile phone camera in Japan.
The bar code method is usually completed by the following processes.
In the preprocessing stage,
(1) encoding the desired URL into a bar code;
(2) printing the encoded bar code with image samples on paper.
In its application,
(1) starting a bar code reading is make by the use of a mobile phone;
(2) The bar code is printed to a mobile phone camera;
(3) the bar code is captured by the mobile phone camera and is controlled by
the bar code reading solution. The URL is automatically decoded from
the captured image;
(4) the mobile phone is linked to the website with decoded URL;
(5) the website page is downloaded to the screen of the mobile phone.
As an application of print-to-web linking technology using a mobile phone
camera, the bar code method is a mature technique widely used in daily life.
However, as shown in Fig. 10.4, the major defect of bar code may be its dull
design. It was imagined that the original design of printed image would be
spoiled, when the pages of a magazine have too many mosaic-like patterns. The
bar code methods require additional space on paper for printing a bar code
with an image sample. This will reduce the effectiveness of advertisements.
It is for the above reasons that many advertising agencies are unwilling to
print bar code with the samples on their papers. The bar code is used freely
on the Internet [11].
