as an identification card and a multimedia terminal. Currently, some have
already been realized in our daily life.
In addition to the mobile phone services described above, an innovation of
traditional mobile phone is the appearance of the mobile phone camera. You
can easily capture a picture and share it. In Japan, Sharp and J-Phone [3]
introduced the first camera-phone J-SH04 [4] in September 2000. Three years
later, in 2003, about 60% percent of mobile phones in Japan have cameras.
It is expected that by 2005 the market penetration will about 100%. The
image quality has greatly improved from the original 110k pixels of the J-
SH04 in 2000 to the 4M pixels of D901iS [5] in 2005. This is as powerful as
a high performance digital camera. With the rapid growth of mobile phone
camera, a major topic on the Internet is the application of print-to-web linking
technology using a mobile phone camera.
The print-to-web linking technology using mobile phone camera is a tech-
nique where users can instantly link from a printed image to a related website.
More information can then be acquired. The QR (quick response) code and
bar code have been commercialized for print-to-web linking technology using a
mobile phone camera. Many makers are still trying to develop new techniques
to replace the QR code and the bar code. This is because they are unsatisfied
with the dull designs of the QR code and the bar code. They consider that
the dull designs reduces the commercial effect of advertisements if they are
printed using a QR code or bar code.
In order to develop new techniques to replace the QR code and bar code
applications, in recent years, many new methods have been proposed for the
applications of print-to-web linking technology using mobile phone camera.
In these methods, watermarking techniques have been given much attention
where the URL of a related website is acquired by extracting the watermark
from the captured image by using a mobile phone camera. Their general use
is still challenging problems. The major problem is the geometrical distortion
of the images using a mobile phone camera.
Another new method of print-to-web technology using a mobile phone
camera is that using recognition techniques. This is where the URL of a related
website is acquired by using image recognition techniques. Compared with
the methods using watermarking techniques, the methods using recognition
techniques have high image quality and a high rate of success in print-to-web
linking. This is because recognition techniques do not require embedding of
information into an image. The image containing geometrical distortion can
be also recognized by the use of image recognition techniques.
Although many new methods have been proposed to replace the QR code
or bar code in recent years, there are still restrictions to their applications.
The general uses of them are still challenging works. What is the future of
print-to-web linking technology using mobile phone camera be? What market
will exist in the near future? In this chapter, I introduce the development
