8.5.4 Conclusions
This chapter presented a solution to the problem of hiding data into com-
pressed image files in bit-plane-based steganography methods. The proposed
scheme is based on a seamless integration of BPCS steganography with
JPEG2000 image compression standard. Embedding rates of around 15%
of the compressed image size were achieved for pre-embedding 1.0bpp com-
pressed images with no noticeable degradation in image quality. The proposed
JPEG2000-BPCS steganography will allow many more people access to the
benefits of BPCS steganography due to many desirable features of JPEG2000
standard.
8.6 Histogram Preserving JPEG Steganography
The JPEG compression using the discrete cosine transform (DCT) is still the
most common compression standard for still images, though the JPEG2000
standard has already been released. Getting less attention, JPEG images are
therefore the most suitable dummy (cover) images for steganography using
compressed images. Several steganographic techniques using JPEG images
have already been proposed such as J-Steg [18] and F5 [19]. It is well known
