Translational medicine application in drug development. The development of new drug entities depends on the progression of scientific
advances from basic science laboratories to clinical research studies and to drug discovery laboratories. One examplewould be in the area of immunology
where discoveries made in the basic science laboratories are applied when characterizing immunological abnormalities in autoimmune populations. In
addition, the information would be used to identify new molecular targets for therapeutic intervention in the treatment of autoimmunity. Conversely,
biomarker results obtained during preclinical or clinical studies may assist in elucidating new immunological processes and feed information back to the
basic science laboratories.
